Volkswagen CO2 scam hits a range of petrol engines
Volkswagen has admitted that a wide range of 2016 MY petrol-engined cars from VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT have CO2 emissions that are not correct.
Volkswagen’s follow-up scandal to the dieselgate defeat device scam – the confession that 800,000 VW cars have official CO2 and economy figures that are plain wrong – affects far more petrol engines than had been previously indicated.VW issued a statement last night confirming that 430,000 2016 model year cars from VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT have emissions that have been ‘understated’, revealing a list of cars that include petrol engines not previously thought to be affected.
Initially, when VW admitted they’d faked the emissions and economy of up to 800,0000 cars, they pointed the finger at just the 1.4 litre cylinder on demand engine in the Polo. But it’s much wider than that (you can grab a pdf of the 2016 MY VW Group CO2 scam cars).
In addition to the 1.4 litre ACT engine, VW say there are ‘implausible’ CO2 emissions attached to the 1.0 litre TSI – in the VW Polo, SEAT Ibiza and Leon – the 1.8 litre TSI in the Leon, the 1.2 litre and 1.4 litre TSI in the VW Jetta and the 2.0 litre TSI in the Volkswagen Golf and Passat. There were also CO2 ‘errors’ across a range of diesel engines.
The 430,000 number relates only to cars from the 2016 model year, so we will have to wait and see if the original 800,000 number grows as VW reveal how many pre-2016 cars have official CO2 and economy ratings that have also been scammed.
