Volkswagen has done a good job with the 5-door Polo, making it better looking and less drab than the outgoing car. And the new 3-door is actually better looking than its multi-doored sibling. The three-door looks more aggressive with a sharp kink in the window line and a sharp crease running down the side of the Polo. But apart from the stylistic changes and the change in perspective, the 3-door Polo is the same under the skin as the 5-door.
As with the 5-door, there will be four trim levels – S, SE, Moda and SEL – with the entry-level Polo S starting at £9,400. But even this base model Polo comes with Air Bags, ABS, ESP and hydraulic brake assist, CD stereo, speed sensitive power steering and electric windows. Not too terrible at comfortably under £10k. As you go up the trim levels you get extras like bigger alloys, AirCon, iPod connectivity and tyre pressure warning.
Engines at launch will be a choice of six – two diesel and four petrol. There will be two naturally aspirated 1.2 litre petrols; a 1.4 litre petrol; a 1.2 litre turbo petrol and a pair of 1.6 litre TDi units.
Volkswagen are bringing the 3-door Polo to Frankfurt next month, and production will start in October. First Polo 3-doors are expected to hit UK showrooms in January 2010.

Alfred Russell says
I have had my Polo SE for two months now and so far it is doing all that I expected of it. But two things are disappointing me, firstly there are enough drinks places to have a party but nowhere to store anything. The spec I read (1 March 2010) and also the car I had a trial in had a drawer under the front seat but this is absent in my car just a blank in it’s place. When did the spec change? or has it.
