2017 Tow Car Awards see wins for Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Hyundai, Audi and more

The 2017 Tow Car Awards see the Land Rover Discovery take the top award, with awards for Jaguar, Audi, Volvo, Hyundai, Skoda, Suzuki and more too.

You don’t need to be a geography teacher with leather patches on your elbows to want a good tow car for your caravan; people buy cars to tow everything from a small trailer to a powerful boat – and all points in between.

So the Annual Tow Car awards have relevance for a lot of car owners, and that’s illustrated by the range of awards on offer, from Best Ultralight Tow Car and Economy Tow Car through to the 1900kg plus class and Best Pick-Up for towing.

This year’s awards have seen the new Land Rover Discovery pick up the Best Overall Tow Car award (no big surprises there) as well as the best in the 1900kg plus category.

Jaguar picks up a couple of awards for the XF 2.0 i4 180PS RWD Portfolio and F-Pace 3.0d 300PS AWD S, and Volvo takes the award for the best Hybrid Tow car with the XC90 T8 Twin Engine Momentum.

At the other end of the scale, the Hyundai i30 1.4 T-GDi 140PS Premium grabs Best Ultralight Tow Car and the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 1.4 BoosterJet Allgrip the Best Budget 4X4.

The awards are given after an extensive range of tests towing up to 85% of the car’s kerbweight, including testing high-speed stability, slalom and emergency lane-changes, as well as referring to What Car? tests of the cars when not towing.

David Motton, Tow Car Editor of Practical Caravan magazine said:

All the winners of the Tow Car Awards 2017, whether they are big or small, have shown us that they’re particularly good as an overall package to tow, own and live with every day.

When it came to choosing this year’s overall winner it had to be the new Land Rover Discovery as it sets a new benchmark as an impressive all-rounder.
