Porsche appears to be close to announcing the production of the 918 Spyder Hybrid after they received expressions of interest from 900 customers.
Porsche pulled a surprise at the Geneva Motor Show this year by revealing the Porsche 918 Spyder – a hybrid supercar that looked production-ready. And Porsche seem intent on making it but only if they get enough serious intentions to buy from prospective customers.
Porsche set the number of interested customers at 1,000 to make the 918 Spyder a viable production model – remember that the Carrera GT, Porsche’s last Hypercar, was a run of just 1,270 – and Bloomberg are now reporting that they already have 900 serious intents.
We’re not too sure exactly how Porsche grades their expressions of serious intent. Do they have to be from existing customers known to be likely to buy, or just any old Tom, Dick or Harry phoning up and saying they’d like a 918 Spyder? But who cares, as long as they build the car.
Just as a reminder, the Porsche 918 Spyder has a V8 petrol delivering ‘…more than 500bhp’, a trio of electric motors that can contribute a further 218bhp which, when working in tandem with the V8, can produce a 3 second 0-60mph time and a top speed of 200mph. It can also manage 90mpg and emissions of 70g/km CO2 when you stop blatting and switch to eco-mode.
We’re not fans of many hybrid cars. But we’ll certainly make an exception for the 918 Spyder. And the sooner the better.
