The Audi Quattro Concept rolls out at Paris
Audi has revealed the Audi Quattro Concept, a 408bhp, shortned S5 designed to commemorate the original Audi Quattro.
It was close. We almost got it right when we said that Audi would be bringing along the Audi UrQuattro Concept to Paris. We just figured they’d use the name of the original concept to commemorate 30 years since its strode on to the world stage and changed our peceptions of Audi forever. And made AWD a mainstream reality for cars.
But they didn’t call it UrQuattro. It is simply the Audi Quattro Concept. Which I suppose says it simply enough. But apart from the name our info seems to have been just about right.
The Quattro Concept is based on a shortened S5 chassis and gets the TT’s lump suitably fettled to deliver 408bhp. It also gets proper, grown-up 4WD, not the low-rent version seen in the TT. So fettled, the two-seat Quattro can scuttle to 60mph in just 3.9 seconds, which makes the original look rather arthritic.
The front of the Audi Quattro is dominated by an enormous grill and the side profile shows very thick C-Pillars. There is no doubt that Audi has abandoned elegant in the Quattro for liberal doses of butch. But it works. The Quattro looks to be a little powerhouse, with a totally different charchter to other Audi’s.
But Audi say they have no intention of producing the Quattro. This is just a celebration of the original. But don’t believe a word of it. This will turn in to a limited edition, celebration model. Perhaps 500 or so at a less than bargain basement price.
If I were you, I’d be calling my Audi dealer. Sooner rather than later.
