Jaguar & Land Rover to share more platforms. But you already knew that.

As Jaguar and Land Rover expand their model range and move to aluminium construction, they plan to share more platforms.

Jaguar has been using an aluminium platform for the XJ for some time – long before the latest XJ came along.

The aluminium platform the XJ uses is just the start for Jaguar Land Rover, as we reported back in 2009, and it seems that JLR are planning to use the move to aluminium underpinnings to cut their platforms to just two or three. Well, two or three basic platforms.

The 2013 Range Rover already shares its core platform with the new Jaguar XJ, and the 2014 Range Rover Sport and 2015 Land Rover Discovery are expected to use modified versions of the same platform.

As things move forward – and it’ll take a number of years – the Freelander and Evoque, which already share a non-aluminium platform, could end up sharing the new aluminium platform from the next generation Jaguar XF or new small Jaguar

The new F-Type – just like the Evoque – uses a more traditional platform based on the current XK’s – albeit with more aluminium for stuff like the suspension – but that too will end up moving to an aluminium platform shared with the next generation Jaguar XK.

It all makes sense – and, as Autocar are reporting, is a move to emulate what VW are doing with their MQB platform – and fits in with the rationalisation of engines and Infotainment systems across the JLR range. It is not only more cost-effective for JLR but allows new models to be created more easily.

Which is good for Jaguar Land Rover and car buyers. Even if it’s quite old news.
