Blackadder and Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson is selling his beloved McLaren F1 after owning it from new and two nasty prangs. He wants £8 million.

As McLaren F1 owners go, Rowan Atkinson is in a league of his own as an owner who’s owned it since new and drives it rather than keeping it in climate-controlled splendour merely to gaze at his appreciating asset.
But now, after nearly two decades of ownership, Rowan is selling his McLaren F1 and wants a cool £8 million for it.

For a nearly 20 year old car with 41,000 miles on the clock, you might think that’s a bit strong. But in the realms of F1 sales it’s far from it.

And although Rowan’s F1 is one of the more ‘used’ examples, it’s recently spent two years at McLaren after Rowan had a nasty prang, a prang that ended up with a bill for £940,000 resulting in an almost completely re-built F1.

According to Rowan, he thinks it’s time someone else had a chance at owning his F1. He told Andrew Frankel in a Daily Telegraph article:

It was never bought as an investment.
I bought it for the quality of the thinking that went into its design, and now it has become a thing of value, it is time for it to be enjoyed by someone else.

How much the burden of on-going maintenance, and the doubtless size of his insurance premium after his last prang, play a part in his decision to sell his F1, we’ll never know.
