The Volvo V90 Cross Country has been officially revealed in Sweden as the final piece of Volvo’s 90 Series cars and replacement for the XC70. Arrives in the UK Q1 2017
But now we get the real deal, with the new Volvo V90 Cross County officially revealed as successor to the now venerable XC70, and as an all terrain take on the latest V90 estate.
Just as you’d expect, for car aimed at the Audi A6 All Road and upcoming All Terrain version of Mercedes’ E-Class, the V90 Cross Country comes with added purpose, a raised ride height and cladding to make it less vulnerable to poor road and off-road surfaces.
Interestingly, the press release from Volvo on the V90 Cross Country is long on words and short on real detail, but we can glean that the V90 CC will be all-wheel drive and with a chassis optimised for comfort and control, which is just where the V90 CC should be.
We can assume – but we could be wrong – that the V90 CC will only come as a D5 diesel and T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid as they’re the only powertrains offered in the V90 with 4WD, but Volvo could be planning a T6 or even a D4 version.
Despite a bit of guess work on what Volvo are offering with the V90 CC, it’s clear they intend it to be a lower riding alternative to the XC90 rather than a style-only take on the V90 Estate.
They also appear to have made the V90 CC a more refined product than the XC70 was, with its abilities inherent and no need to shout its intent with masses of plastic cladding.
Assuming the entry-level V90 Cross Country will be the D5 PowerPulse AWD Momentum, we’d guess the starting price will be around £45-46,000 – just a tad cheaper than the equivalent XC90.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country will go on sale later this month, with first UK deliveries expected Q1 2017.
