Kia GT performance saloon teased
The Kia GT looks to be finally heading for production as a toned down sports saloon, with Kia teasing its arrival at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
As long ago as the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, the Kia GT was revealed as Kia’s take on a coupe sports saloon. And it was stunning. But, we were told, this stunning GT Concept was more than that, it heralded a production model likely to hit Kia showrooms in 2013. Only it didn’t.
But now, more than five years on, it looks like the Kia GT is about to turn in to a production reality, albeit with much toned-down looks and without the statement front and back, floating nose, big alloys and suicide rear doors. Still, there seems to be a hint of the overall shape left.
Kia has started a tease for a sport saloon with a video (below) teasing its performance at the Nurburgring in what looks like the first of a series of teases ahead of a likely debut at the Detroit Motor Show next month.
Kia’s video shows us nothing to give the game away, but fortunately we have a leaked (and slightly defaced) photo of the new Kia GT courtesy of Kia World, showing is just how much tamer the production version looks to be.
The original Kia GT Concept came with a 3.3 litre turbo driving the rear wheels, but it seems likely the production GT will come with a version of the 2.0 litre turbo under the bonnet of the (now not going anywhere, we think) Kia GT4 Stinger Concept, which was good for 311bhp, as well as a plug-in hybrid and a diesel version.
Doubtless much of our speculation will be answered as Kia rolls out a series of teases between now and the New Year.
