Lewis Hamilton on POLE for the Spanish Grand Prix – Vettel starts alongside

Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, with Sebastian Vettel putting his Ferrari in second just 0.051s behind Hamilton.

It’s the turn of Lewis Hamilton to bag a pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, leading in all three qualifying sessions to put his Mercedes ahead of Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari.

But the Ferrari of Vettel wasn’t overshadowed by much, and Vettel’s time in Q3 was just 0.051s behind the Mercedes. Which augers well for the race.

Behind Hamilton and Vettel it’s a matching second row with the Mercedes of Bottas in third and Raikkonen’s Ferrari in fourth, and an all Red Bull row three with Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

Row four is a bit of a surprise, with Fernando Alonso – clearly feeling feisty after his Indy practice this week and in front of his home crowd – grabbing an unexpected seventh spot for McLaren alongside the Force India of Sergio Perez, with Felipe Massa and Esteban Ocon making up the top ten for Williams and Force India.

Williams won’t be overly chuffed at Massa’s ninth place start, but it’s a chunk better than team mate Lance Stroll’s 18th, one place ahead of Vandoorne’s McLaren.

Tomorrow’s race is probably going to be another Mercedes/Ferrari battle (at least there is a battle this year) and it’ll be interesting to see what Alonso can do with his McLaren in front of a partisan crowd.
