BMW iX3 – BMW’s first ELECTRIC SUV – teased on video

The BMW iX3, BMW’s first electric SUV, is heading for a debut next week at the Beijing Motor Show in Concept guise, ahead of which BMW are starting the iX3’s tease with a Twitter video.

Mercedes has already been putting its EQ C electric SUV front and centre to counter the arrival of Jaguar I-Pace, and Audi has gone further with its e-tron electric SUV, trying to be a spoiler at Jaguar’s party as the British firm grabs a lead by delivering an electric SUV you can actually buy, whereas the German opposition isn’t quite there yet.

But what of BMW in all this, with Audi and Mercedes trying to get as much coverage for their electric SUVs ahead of launch as possible? BMW has been notably absent from the fray – but not for much longer.

Ahead of the debut of the BMW i3X Concept at the Beijing Motor Show, BMW has delivered a video on Twitter (below) to herald its imminent arrival, although it doesn’t tell us much.

In fact, all it does tell us is that BMW has had a play with the kidney grille on the iX3 (which won’t please the BMW anoraks much) and it’s clearly a grill that’s there for the sake of deign and continuity.

What exactly the iX3 is going to offer from its battery and two electric motors – one on each axle – is not clear, although the seemingly standard setup for the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQ C is around 400bhp, 90kWh battery and a range of around 300 miles.

But we’ll find out how much power, range and battery capacity the iX3 actually has in the next few days.
