Porsche Taycan, Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo
The new Porsche Taycan – Porsche’s first electric car – will be offered in familiar model line-up of Tyacan, Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo.
It’s more than a year since Porsche’s Oliver Blume declared that the Mission E – as we knew it then – would be priced very similarly to the Panamera, indicating a starting price of around £70k for Porsche’s first foray in to electric cars.Of course, a starting point of around £70k doesn’t mean that’s what the car we now know as the Taycan will cost, but what the entry-level Taycan will cost, with plenty of headroom for more powerful and appealing versions.
That’s now been confirmed by Porsche in an email to The Drive‘s Alex Roy when he signed up to place a deposit on a Taycan, with confirmation on ballpark pricing and model designations.
It comes as no surprise to learn that Porsche will deliver the Taycan EV in more than one guise of power and equipment, but what is, perhaps, a bit surprising is that Porsche appear to be planning to deliver the Taycan as an entry-level, a Taycan 4S and a Taycan Turbo – juts like its ICE models.
On the face of it the continuation of familiar nomenclature in to a new electric car seems a bit daft, but car makers’ car naming has become so far removed from reality it really doesn’t matter.
There was a time when you could tell what a car was from its badge, but that’s all been lost, and although Porsche has been using ‘Turbo’ for an age, all its 911 engines are now ‘Turbo’, so it’s become just the name of the top of the range model.
So why not continue it through to their electric model? It makes more sense than tailpipes on a Taycan.
