The wreck of the Alpine A110 driven by Top Gear’s Chris Harris
An Alpine A110 being driven by Top Gear’s Chris Harris – with Eddie Jordan in the passenger seat – has been destroyed by fire whilst running a stage of the Monte Carlo Rally.
It seems Richard Hammond isn’t the only Top Gear presenter to see a car he’s driving go up in flames. In filming for the new Series of Top Gear, Chris Harris was driving a closed stage of the Monte Carlo Rally – co-piloted by F1’s Eddie Jordan – in a new alpine A110 when an engine warning light came on.
Harris pulled over and opened the door to find flames licking up his arm so, rather sensibly, both Harris and Jordan made a swift exit from the car.
It seems attempts were made to extinguish the flames with hand-held fire extinguishers, but to no avail. By the time the fire brigade arrived the Alpine was nothing but a smouldering wreck.
Both Chris Harris and Eddie Jordan seemed more bemused than terrified by the incident, with Harris mourning the loss of a beautiful car, and Jordan saying the car was stunning until it went up in flames, and that it was a shame they couldn’t finish the stage.
Top Gear say Alpine are now investigating what caused the fire, and that in the meantime they’ve halted all drives of pre-production versions of the A110.
But at least it will give Top Gear a much anticipated feature in the new series, just as The Grand Tour did with Hammond’s Rimac escapade.
