BMW 3 Series GT Spied

We have a spy shot of the BMW 3-Series GT which is likely to launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September,  together with the new 2012 BMW 3-Series.

I can’t say we’ve really laid awake at night thinking about it, but the reveal of the BMW 3 Series GT must be getting close. As, for that matter, must the whole new 2012 BMW 3-Series.

We first reported that BMW were making a 3-Series GT back in 2009, but we did know they wouldn’t be building one on the current platform, waiting instead for when the new 3-Series due to put in an appearance, probably at Frankfurt in the Autumn (if not before).

The spy photo above clearly shows the 3-Series GT be transported and confirms the likelihood that the GT will become the fifth body syle for the 2012 3-Series at launch – Saloon, Coupe, Convertible, Estate and GT – and allow BMW to play the Audi niche-filling game.

In terms of style the 3-Series GT seems to look just like a 5-Series GT after a boil wash, and comes complete with fancy tailgate and more upright stance. Which will make it eminently practical but unlikely to win any beauty contests.

Engines are likely to range from small, 1.6 litre four-pot turbo lumps on up to a 3.0 litre  turbo inline-six by way of a hybrid. But we rather doubt we’ll see anything more than that.

And we’re still struggling to see the point of the GT.
