There are rumours that BMW is planning a new small urban SUV – the BMW Urban X – to be the new entry-level BMW SUV. Which seems a niche too far.
If you want a ‘Premium’ SUV, there is not shortage of makers to choose from, from Audi to Volvo by way of Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW and more. But perhaps no one has embraced the demand for SUVs in the way BMW has, with the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 already on offer. But now, according to Auto Express, BMW are planning yet another SUV.
This new SUV is said to be a model to sit below the current BMW SUV offerings, and according to AE, BMW will call it the BMW Urban X (that’s Urban ‘Cross’). Presumably because BMW X0.5 would seem a bit daft.
Apparently, the Urban X will be no more than 4.2 metres long, which is 160mm shorter than the BMW X2 (which is actually smaller than the BMW X1) and be aimed at the Audi Q2.
Of course, there’s no reason why BMW couldn’t deliver the Urban X; it already has a platform it could use with the UKL2 platform underpinning MINI and X1, which comes with the ability to house ICE and electrified powertrains. But just becuase you can…
We’re not convinced the BMW Urban X is actually in the planning, but stranger things have happened.
