BMW X7 Concept debut at Frankfurt set to get a HYDROGEN powertrain
The BMW X7 – BMW’s challenge to the Range Rover – is set to debut in Concept guise at the Frankfurt Motor Show – and with Hydrogen power.
BMW has been playing at Premium SUVs for a long time now, but it hasn’t delivered anything which competes with the Range Rover, or even the Mercedes GLS. Until now.
Now, we’re about to get the new BMW X7, a big, luxurious seven-seat SUV offering all the luxuries of the 7-Series but in a big SUV.
The X7 is due to get its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month – albeit in ‘Concept’ guise – and, according to BMW Blog, it will sport a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.
We know BMW has been playing with hydrogen fuel cells for at least the last five years, but delivering Hydrogen fuel cell power in such a big lump of a car is an interesting idea. But we’re going to have to wait to find out exactly what it offers.
It may well just be a ‘Look what we can do’ from BMW, without any real production intent, but even if there’s going to be a hydrogen fuel cell X7, it will be far from the only powertrain on offer.
Expect to see a range of BMW’s petrol and diesel six and eight cylinder engines – depending on the market – but the X7 will certainly get a plug-in hybrid version based on that in the 740e.
Aimed unashamedly at the Middle East and US markets, BMW UK has said they will be offering the X7 too, although whether they’ll offer the whole range remains to be seen.
The new BMW X7 is expected to go in to production in early 2019 and be built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
