Lewis Hamilton (C) on pole at British Grand Prix. Vettel (L) starts 2nd, Raikkonen (R) third
Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole position for the 2018 British Grand Prix in his final qualifying lap, pushing Vettel’s Ferrari in to second place.
It’s probably fair to say that the Silverstone track suits Mercedes and Ferrari more than it suits Red Bull, and it is perhaps also fair to say that, at this moment in time at Silverstone, Ferrari looks to have the edge on Mercedes. And that’s how it looked in qualifying for the 2018 British Grand Prix. But the roar of a partisan crowd sent a blast of air behind Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes on his last qualifying lap, and it was enough to put Hamilton on pole – by just 0.044s. Which is, quite literally, less than the blink of an eye.
Hamilton’s pole pushed Vettel in to second, with Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari starting in third spot, alongside the Mercedes of Bottas in fourth. The third row, as you’d expect, is a Red bull row of Verstappen and Ricciardo.
Behind the top three teams it’s the Haas pair of Magnussen and Grosjean in seventh and eighth, another good drive from Leclerc in the Sauber in ninth and Force India’s Ocon starts 10th.
Williams had another woeful outing, at their home Grand Prix, with the aerodynamic weaknesses of the Williams car seeming to be responsible for both Sirotkin and Stroll spinning off in Q1 and starting 18th and 19th. McLaren fared a bit better, but not much, with Alonso starting 13th and Vandoorne in 17th.
The crowd may be behind Lewis for the win tomorrow, but Ferrari look very dangerous.
