Nico Rosberg (pictured) clinches the world title in Abu Dhabi
Nico Rosberg has won his first formula 1 world title in Abu Dhabi, despite Lewis Hamilton’s best efforts, as Hamilton took the win to finish the title race second.
Lewis Hamilton has won the final Grand Prix of 2016 in Abu Dhabi, driving, much of the time, more slowly than he could have in the hope of backing Nico Rosberg in to the following pack and in to trouble. But it didn’t work.In a different era, Hamilton would just have tipped Rosberg off the track, taken the win and been world champion – but that was never really on the cards – so he settled for trying to mix things up, despite being told by his team – and even Paddy Lowe himself – to speed up, but it was all for nought as Hamilton ignored their pleas
But despite it looking like Vettel and Verstappen were in with a chance of passing him at various points – and if they both had Hamilton would have won the title – and he did have to deal with Verstappen in front of him after a pit stop before passing him, Rosberg came home in second and took the title.
Away from the main event, it was a sad day to see the end of Jenson Button’ F1 career, with a final race ruined early on with a broken wishbone on his McLaren ending his race, but Massa’s final race ended better with a ninth place finish.
But no one will rally remember the race as the end of the road for Button and Massa, but the day Hamilton lost a title that should have been his to a man who thoroughly deserved it.
Congratulations Nico Rosberg – 2016 World Champion.
