Lewis Hamilton grabs SURPRISE pole at Singapore Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton pulled an epic qualifying lap out of the bag in Q3 for the 2018 F1 Singapore Grand Prix, usurping the Ferraris and taking pole position.

Until final qualifying in the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix, it looked like it was going to be Ferrari’s game.

But a stunning first run in Q3 by Lewis Hamilton turned the weekend’s form on its head, delivering a lap a full 1.3 seconds quicker than Hamilton had managed all weekend – and secured him pole position for tomorrow’s race.

Hamilton’s race engineer declared the lap “Epic”, and he wasn’t wrong; Hamilton couldn’t improve on his opening Q3 lap, but nor could anyone else.

The closest was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who could only get within 0.3 seconds, followed by Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari another 0.3 seconds behind, with Hamilton’s team mate, Valtteri Bottas, taking fourth place on tomorrow’s grid, 0.1 seconds behind Vettel.

The third row of the grid sees Raikkonen in fifth and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in sixth, followed by Perez in seventh, Grosjean in eighth, Ocon in ninth and Hulkenberg in 10th.

It was a slightly better qualifying for McLaren with Alonso just losing out on Q3 and starting 11th, although Vandoorne is once again almost at the back, ahead of just the Williams cars.

Can Ferrari find enough to trample across Lewis Hamilton tomorrow? Possibly, although Max Verstappen could spoil the party for both Mercedes and Ferrari, looking very dangerous alongside Hamilton on the front row.
