Lewis Hamilton takes pole in Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes has beaten Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull to pole position in the 2013 Hungary Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel had looked the man in form, and most likely to take pole position for tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix, but L:ewis Hamilton surprised him – and surprised himself – with a stunning final lap in the last moments of final qualifying.

Hamilton’s storming lap beat Vettel in to second place and was stunned to be told on the radio he was in P1. “Is that pole?”, said a surprised Hamilton, before whooping with glee.

Behind Hamilton and Vettel was a good drive by Romain Grosjean in the Lotus to take third, with Hamilton’s team mate, Nico Rosberg, taking fourth in his Mercedes.

On the third row of the grid is Alonso in trhe Ferrari on fifth with Kimi Raikkonen putting his Lotus in to sixth. The rest of final qualifying saw Massa’s Ferrari in seventh, Ricciardo’s Torro Rosso in eighth, McLaren’s Perez took ninth and Mark Webber brought up the rear in his Red Bull.

It may have ended up Hamilton’s qualifying, but the day was less good for his fellow Brits.

McLaren’s Jenson Button failed to make final qualifying and will start in 13th tomorrow, and Ford India’s Paul di Resta didn’t even make it past Q1, and will start in 18th .

If, and it’s a huge if, Hamilton can get away cleanly tomorrow, he stands a good chance of a podium finish on a track that’s very difficult to overtake on. It could all come down to the best pit strategy.
