Mazda MX-5 Black & Matte Edition revealed

Mazda in France has created a limited edition MX-5 – the Mazda MX-5 Matte & Black – in collaboration with design label LK to celebrate the MX-5’s 20th anniversary.

You’ve heard it everywhere you go. The Mazda MX-5 is the best Roadster in the world. Not the fastest. Not the most expensive. Not, in fact, the ‘Most’ anything. Apart, that is, from being the most perfect combination of lightness, simplicity, fun and proper build quality you can find in a roadster.

Remarkably, the Mazda MX-5 (or Mazda Miata / Mazda Roadster, depending on where you’re reading this) is 20 years old. And Mazda have been putting the MX-5 front and centre a lot recently as a result. We had the Mazda MX-5 Superlight at Frankfurt and we had the MX-5 20th Anniversary at Geneva. Limited Edition MX-5s have also been sprouting up around the world, and this time we have one from France.

But this is France, so the focus is as much on the ‘Couture’ as the ‘Voiture’. In fact in many ways the focus is almost completely on the ‘Couture’, as we don’t think this particular Limited Edition MX-5 – the Mazda MX-5 Black and Matte Edition – is going to see a showroom. Which in some ways is a shame; in others it’s for the best.

The Mazda MX-5 Black and Matte Edition was created to show at the 21st annual Salon du Cabriolet, Coupé & SUV in Paris (no, we hadn’t heard of it either) and is a collaboration between Mazda France and design label LK, run by Laure Kczekotowska. And we approve hugely of the matt black paint job. But it seems that LK have also decked out the MX-5 with jewels including rhinestones, gems, and crystals. Which fortunately you can’t actually see in the pictures.

So, Mazda France, bring us the MX-5 Black and Matte. But drop the jewels. The MX-5 doesn’t need gilding.
