Mercedes-AMG GT – Destroyer of Porsche 911 dreams

Mercedes has released a promo video for the new Mercedes-AMG GT, proclaiming it the destroyer of childhood dreams of the Porsche 911.
Little boys – and big boys too – dream of Porsches, but Mercedes believe they’ve crushed those dreams with the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG GT, and they’re not shying away from taking a dig at Stuttgart’s finest in a new promo video for the AMG GT.
After harrying the 911, the AMG GT overtakes and roars off in to the distance, the little boy wakes up with an astonished look on his face and the tag line appears: “The car you dreamed of as a child has just been overtaken”.
It’s a not exactly subtle dig at Porsche’s 911, and demonstrates clearly that Mercedes sees its target buyer as one who would previously bought a 911. And they may be right.
Real Porsche anoraks will still take the 911, but buyers who enter the market for a supercar for the first time can’t fail to see the AMG GT as real competition, from its price (from £97k) to its performance (even the base GT does 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds) and its looks, the AMG-GT really is an appealing everyday supercar. Which was always the USP of the Porsche 911.
Stuttgart vs Affalterbach. It’s going to get serious.
