The new Mercedes GLE has been officially revealed ahead of its New York debut, with new styling, more luxury and equipment and a plug-in hybrid 500e too.
We revealed yesterday that the new Mercedes GLE will debut at the New York Motor Show next week, which Mercedes has now confirmed and revealed photos and model range details of the Mercedes take on the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.
As expected, the new GLE gets a more modern look – one that’s a little less style-driven than its rakish sibling, the GLE Coupe – with the boxy SUV silhouette still intact, a new family nose with swept-back headlights, trademark C-pillar, roof rails, rounded wheelarches and integrated tail pipes.
Engine option start with the GLE 250d, offering 201bhp and 52.3mpg from its 2.0 litre turbo diesel, and the GLE 350d with 254bhp and 44.1mpg from its 3.0 litre V6 diesel – both with nine-speed auto gearbox.
At the other end of the GLE range there’s the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC, with a very useful 577bhp sorted chassis and the ability to get to 62mph in just 4.2 seconds.
But the big engine news is the arrival of the GLE 500e – as we reported yesterday – as Mercedes eco take on the GLE.
The 500e comes with a total of 436bhp from its combination of a 328bhp 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine and 114bhp electric motor, a combination that delivers official figures of 85.6mpg and 78g/km. Which is great if you have to pay BIK on your car, but in the real world the economy will struggle to get to 40mpg and the performance, which Mercedes say is comparable to the V8, won’t be for a chunk of the time.
Still, you will be able to trolly round city streets on electric power for up to 19 miles (10 is probably more like it in reality) and smile at the tax you’re saving and the green halo you’re wearing.
Inside, the GLE is pretty much what you’d expect and gets the same sort of upgrades from the old ML as the GLE Coupe, with the 7″ floating screen (bigger screen optional) replacing the old integrated unit, new centre console, nicer materials, more technology and options like Comfort Pack.
No news yet on prices for the new Mercedes GLE – or when it arrives in the UK – but we’ll update on that when we know.
