Mercedes are reported to be planning a smaller stand-alone AMG – a ‘Baby’ SLS – to take on the Porsche 911. But not until 2014.
The Mercedes SLS AMG is the first, fully fledged car to come out of the AMG stable. Every other AMG to date has been an add on to an existing Mercedes model but this AMG is a stand-alone car built to replace the McLaren SLR collaboration.
So do we think it likely that this will be the only pure AMG model Mercedes is going to offer? Not a chance. But there have been no real whisperings on the next AMG – until now.
Pistonheads is reporting that they managed to have a conversation with the guys at AMG during an event in Monterey and they were somewhat forthcoming on future plans. We of course already know there will be an SLS AMG Convertible and, if our sources are right there is going to be an SLS AMG Black Series. Mercedes has already confirmed their plans for the SLS AMG eDrive in 2013, but what else is up the corporate sleeve?
Well it seems there is a big desire to make a ‘Baby’ SLS. Based on the SLS underpinnings the new baby SLS would be aimed straight at the Porsche 911. It will also feature a V8 of between 5.8 and 6.2 litres but fit in to the nose of a new car that will be somewhat smaller than the long-nosed SLS.
But if you’re in the market for something like this soon you may as well go and get what you had in mind. It seems likely that the baby SLS won’t see the light of day until at least 2014.
