McLaren F1 #044 fetches more than £12 MILLION at auction
McLaren F1 #044 – the very first McLaren F1 to be road-legal in the USA – has just sold for an incredible £12,132,509 at Bonham’s Quail sale.
Last month we revealed that a McLaren F1 was going under the hammer at Bonham’s 2017 Quail sale, and that it could fetch more than £10 million. That high price expectation was not just because there are only 64 road versions of the iconic McLaren F1 ever built, but because this car has a special history.
F1 #044 was the very first McLaren F1 to be made legal in the USA by Ameritech and has been owned ever since by the same chap, who has had it regularly serviced, including fuel cells, with the last service just over a month ago and just 9,600 miles from new.
That all adds up to a very special McLaren F1, and that was reflected by the hammer price – including premium the total price paid was £12,132,509 ($15,620,000).
It would be nice to think that having bought such a stunning car, the new owner will enjoy driving it a bit more than the last owner.
With its BMW power plant delivering 0-60mph in just 3.2 seconds, 0-100mph in 6.35 seconds and a top speed of 240mph, there’s almost nothing, even now, which can hold a candle to the F1 on the road
Sadly, unlike Rowan Atkinson who managed to clock up 41,000 miles in his F1, it seems likely this F1 will continue to be mainly a cosseted investment.
