The new Bentley Continental GT Convertible has arrived, with all the power and luxury of the GT Coupe, but open-air motoring for the wealthy too.
It’s more than a year since the new Bentley Continental GT arrived, so the Continental GT Convertible is a bit late to the party. But it’s here and will, from some point in 2019, offer the wealthy an open-top take on the very good new Continental GT.Despite a tarmac crushing weight, the 626bhp and 664lb/ft of torque from the GT’s W12 engine means the Convertible Continental can blast to 62mph in a scant 3.8 seconds and on to 207mph. Which is proper supercar territory.
It comes with the same 48V control system to keep the big lump flat and going where you point it, cylinder deactivation to help move economy from bankrupting to merely painful, all-wheel drive and an eight-speed dual-clutch ‘box.
Inside, apart from the roof, is just the same elegant luxury as the Coupe – including the trick ‘James Bond’ revolving centre screen – with almost any combination of leather and veneer you can wish for.
That new roof is a canvas one which can be put up or down in 19 seconds at up to 30mph, and can be ordered in a choice of seven colours and in a ‘Tweed’ fabric too if you wish. And Bentley claim the new Convertible, despite its Tweed roof, is as quiet as the old Coupe.
Bentley are a bit under the cosh at the moment having rather mucked up WLTP testing, so there’s no actual release date or a price for the new Continental GT Convertible.
But, although perhaps stating the obvious, it will arrive at some point in 2019 and cost a chunk more than the Coupe.
