New BMW 4 Series: Official - Full specs, prices and photos

BMW has revealed the production version of the 2014 4 Series – the new 3 Series Coupe – and we have specifications, prices and plenty of photos.

We had the arrival of the new BMW 4 Series as a concept back in December, but this afternoon BMW has revealed details of the production 4 Series ahead of a debut at Frankfurt in September.

Looking little changed from the concept, the new 4 Series – a replacement for the old 3 Series Coupe – sits on the same basic platform as the new 3 Series but with wider track and lower suspension.

A bit longer, a bit wider and a bit lower than the old 3 Series Coupe, the new 4 Series also gets a longer wheelbase – a bit more room in the back – and weight rises a bit too.

At launch – after the Frankfurt Show – there will be three engines on offer, a choice of RWD and 4WD and five trim levels – SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and ?M Sport.

Starting point at launch will be the 420d with 181bhp and costing £31,575, the 428i with a 2.0 litre petrol costing £32,595 and the 435i with a six-cylinder petrol delivering 302bhp and costing £40,795.

Following close behind will be the 420i with a 2.0 litre petrol, the 430d with a 245bhp 3.0 litre diesel and a 435d with a potent 309bhp from its 3.0 litre diesel.

BMW say the 435d will only be offered with xDrive (which will help get the torque to the road), and that xDrive will be an option on the 420d and 420i with all models getting a six-speed manual except the 430d and 435d which come with an 8-speed auto as standard.

Following on at some point in 2014 should be the M4 Coupe which will offer something around 450bhp.

The new BMW 4 Series has an interior almost the same as the 3 Series

Inside, the new 4 Series is pretty much what you get in the 3 Series, but you sit a bit lower and the screen is more raked so it’s going to feel more overtly sporty than its saloon sibling.

As far as most everything else goes, all you need to do is look at what’s on offer in the 3 Series to see the trim specs – all models get leather and iDrive, and all but the SE get 18″ alloys – with the sportiest (for now) M Sport models getting the usual go-faster bits bolted on to look mean – even when they’re not.

The new BMW 4 Series is a very good looking – and very appealing – car and it seems likely there’ll be quite a queue to place orders when it goes on sale in the UK in October.

A new BMW 435d with M Sport trim and lots of option boxes ticked would be just perfect as a daily driver.
