We’ve recently had confirmation that BMW are going to create a diesel version of the M5 – the M550d – and we expected BMW to use the same engine to create diesel M versions for the X5 and X6. And it looks like that’s about to happen.
BMW has released a teaser video featuring an X6 with the tag line ‘Powered by M – Step1’. It features an X6 blatting round mountain roads with all its nomenclature conveniently blurred out. And frankly we can’t think it’s anything other than a BMW X6 M50d.
If it is the diesel engined M car for the X6, then it offers a huge amount of promise. We already know that the M550d will get the three stage turbo diesel (not a triple turbo, as we first thought) which will deliver a – slightly disappointing – 380bhp. But what it may – relatively speaking – lack in power is more than made up for by a wall of 520lb/ft of torque.
That amount of twisty stuff will suit the X6 M50d (if that’s the moniker it gets), with lots of low-down grunt and the ability to spring around in the real world with the same sort of physics-defying elan the X6M manages.
The real plus will be when it comes to the fuel pumps. If you use the X6M as a weapon of mass destruction you’ll be lucky to get in to double figures when you’re playing with real intent, and probably not much better than 20mpg overall.
With the diesel X6M you will probably still see 20mpg even when you can’t resist teaching every hot hatch you encounter a lesson in real power, but you’ll end up averaging around 40mpg overall.
The diesel takeover continues, and the BMW X6 M50d looks to be an appealing combination of power and frugality.
More when BMW wants to tease again.
