New Mercedes E-Class teased again ahead of debut

The new Mercedes E-Class – due to be unveiled in Detroit next week – is teased once again ahead of its debut, with a design sketch from Mercedes.

We’ve already seen much of what the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will offer – despite it not being due to be revealed until next week at the Detroit Motor Show – including a full reveal of the new E-Class’s interior.

But with just a week to go before the debut of the latest generation of what is perhaps the most important model in Mercedes’ range we get another tease with this, an artist’s sketch of the new E-Class.

As you’d expect, the E-Class sketch takes artistic licence to make the new E-Class look more dynamic than it will be, but it will lose the angles and edges of the current E-Class in favour of a more fluid design, a design that will make it fit perfectly between the new C-Class and S-Class.

Underpinned by the same MRA platform architecture as the S-Class, the new E-Class will be both longer and wider than the current car, but weigh less.

Engine options will be more efficient than the current generation – and there’s also a chance there will be a plug-in hybrid from launch – with a range-topping E63 AMG model expected to offer as much as 600bhp.

The new E-Class saloon will debut in Detroit next week, and is expected to go on sale in the UK in the summer. It will be followed by an estate version as well as coupe and cabriolet versions, although it will probably be late 2017 before the four model range is complete.

But the new E-Class could go beyond the current four-model line-up, with rumours Mercedes are plotting a jacked-up ‘Allroad’ version of the new E-Class to tackle the Audi A6 Allroad.
