New Toyota Supra WILL get a four-cylinder BMW engine option
The new Toyota Supra, when it finally arrives in 2019, will have the option of a 260bhp four-cylinder BMW engine as well as the 335bhp 3.0 litre six-pot.
Last week, as the new Toyota Supra headed for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and its world dynamic debut, Toyota finally confirmed that it will come with a 3.0 litre six-cylinder petrol engine, good for around 335bhp and mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic. When we ran video of the new Supra running up the Goodwood Hillclimb a day or two later, we did note that in addition to the 3.0 litre BMW engine we expect the Supra to come with a four-cylinder BMW engine option with around 250bhp as a cheaper entry-level option. And now, thanks to some detective work by Road and Track, that’s been confirmed.
Their digging in ZF’s transmission catalogue revealed the Supra is to get a choice of two engines, and this was confirmed to R&T in conversation with Toyota’s Tetsuya Tada at Goodwood.
The second, entry-level, engine for the Supra is BMW’s B48 B20 2.0 litre turbo four-pot, expected to be good for something around 260bhp, in addition to the six-cylinder B58 B30 BMW 3.0 litre turbo with around 335bhp. It also looks like the new BMW Z4 will also have a 375bhp version of the 3.0 litre as an option.
The new Toyota Supra isn’t expected to be revealed in production guise until early 2019.
