New VW Taigun SUV Concept moves production reality closer

Volkswagen has revealed an updated version of the Up! based VW Taigun Concept at the Delhi Auto Expo, moving production of the Taigun closer.

The VW Taigun Concept – a new, very compact, SUV based on up! underpinnings – first made an appearance at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil in 2012 and looked to be not only convincing, but heading for production.

By spring of 2013, VW’s Klaus Bishoff was saying the Taigun would go in to production and not just for emerging markets but for the UK and Europe too. Which made a lot of sense.

That production reality for the Taigun has now got closer with the debut of a slightly revised version of the Taigun Concept, unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo, with just minor tweaks said to have been made in response to the feedback on the first Taigun concept.

Those tweaks include a spare wheel stuck on the boot (which makes this Taigun 136mm longer), a new handle on the boot and some LED spotlights on the roof rails.

Under the bonnet there’s a new 1.0 litre 3-cylinder engine producing 109bhp and good for 60mpg and a 0-62mph of 9.2 seconds, and the Taigun gets 17″ alloys and, although designed for the urban jungle, VW say the Taigun’s ample torque (129lb/ft at 1500rpm) and high ground clearance makes it able off-road too.

The Taigun is doubtless on its way in to production, but it seems unlikely we’ll see one in the UK for at least a couple of years.
