The Range Rover at 40
Land Rover are celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Range Rover and have sent us a ’40 Years of Range Rover’ video and a lengthy press release.
Whatever you may think of the Range Rover, it is a motoring icon. Iconic is bandied around at the drop of a hat these days, but the original Range Rover really was a game-changer.
For the first time there was a vehicle that was just as good on road as off and pretty much single handedly started the luxury SUV craze which – despite the naysayers and eco-mentalists – shows no real sign of abating. In fact the current iteration of the Range Rover has sold more per annum than previous models, and Land Rovers sales are up massively.
Believe it or not – and I find it hard to believe – the Range Rover is forty years old on 17th June. Which if you think about it was probably the last time Jaguar Land Rover were as on top of their game as they are now (of course, they weren’t quite the pairing’ they now are). It was just a couple of years since the original XJ has taken the world by storm and now we had the Range Rover.
So we have celebrations – including the video below. We’ll also have an outing on the 17th June to celebrate, at which we’re convinced there will be a reveal or three. Perhaps the new 4.4 litre TDV8 for the Range Rover and Sport. Perhaps even – despite Land Rover’s denials – the Range Rover LRX.
