Top Gear names the electric Renault 5 as its Car of the Year, and the Dacia Duster as ‘All The Car You’ll Ever Need’.
Despite a great deal of antipathy from private buyers about EVs, Car of the Year short lists seem to be dominated by them. And, to a degree, the Top Gear Car of the Year Awards are similar, with an EV taking Car of the Year although, thankfully, ICE cars have a significant presence too.
The overall winner and Top Gear Car of the Year is the sensibly-priced (for an EV) retro-inspired Renault 5, with TG saying it has appealing looks and is a quality car.
Next up is the Hyundai Santa Fe which has been declared the SUV of the Year, with TG saying there’s no ther family car to rival it for the money, and the VW ID. Buzz named as MPV of the year (if you can stomach the price).
The Kia EV3 grabs the going for Crossover of the Year – Crossovers don’t come any better, sys TG – with the MvLaren 750S named Performance Car of the Year which is ” So naughtily fast it feels like it ought to be illegal…”.
Toyota is named as manufacturer of the Year because it’s gone from beige to interesting, the Aston Martin Vanquish is Super GT of the Year and the Porsche Macan (the new electric Macan) is named Performance SUV of the Year.
Volvo grabs a gong for the electric EX90 as Luxury Family Car of the Year, and Suzuki is Small Car of the Year with the Suzuki Swift Ultra.
But despite the wide range of gongs bestowed by TG – many of them beyond the financial reach of most – there is one car TG has declared the Dacia Duster “All the car you’ll ever need”
It’s an eclectic and interesting bunch of gongs.
