Renault’s new Alpine gets closer with the reveal of the Alpine Vision Concept, which is heading for a debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
The revival of the Alpine brand by Renault has had a few hiccups along the way, most notably the ending of its joint development programme for the car with Caterham, but the first all new Alpine is almost here and is previewed with this, the Alpine Vision Concept.Heading for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Renault chose to unveil the Alpine Vision at an event in Monte Carlo – a good link to Alpine’s previous successes in the Monte Carlo Rally – and, to no one’s surprise it’s a mid-engined, two-seater sports car that’s a road-going take on last year’s Alpine Celebration Concept and, apparently, very close to the production car in almost every way.
Renault no doubt has the Porsche Cayman 718 in its sights with the new Alpine – which could be the Alpine AS110 or AS1 – but the ethos of the Alpine seems closer to that of the Alfa 4C.
The Alpine will weigh in at around 1100kg, with thn engine in the middle driving the rear wheels – probably through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox – with performance of around 4.5 seconds to 62mph promised.
But despite the promise of impressive performance, Renault hasn’t released any information on what will power the Alpine, although the likelihood is it will be the 1.6 litre from the Clio RS, bumped to 1.8 litres and delivering around 250bhp in standard guise.
The interior of the Alpine looks suitably fit for purpose, with simple controls, leather, aluminium and carbon fibre and a hint of the Audi TT, of all things.
Renault say the Alpine Concept will lead to the debut of the production car before the end of 2016, and it will go on sale in the first half of 2017.
