It’s good to have a proper hook to hang a limited edition car on, and Rolls Royce has a decent one with the new Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Collection.
Rolls Royce has the approval of both Malcolm Campbell’s grandson Donald (and his great grandson, Joe) for the Waterspeed Collection, and just 35 examples are being built.
Finished in a stunning tribute colour of Maggiore Blue – named after the lake on which Campbell’s record was set and reminiscent of Campbell’s Bluebird livery – which consists of nine layers of paint followed by hand-sanding and a special powdered lacquer, the paint job even extends to the engine and wheels.
Rolls Royce has also worked hard to tie the Waterspeed DHC in to Campbell’s Bluebird by using materials never seen before on a Rolls Royce including a brushed steel deck – used on Bluebird K3 – and there’s a coachline with Bluebird motif that’s hand-applied.
Inside, the Waterspeed DHC uses the Maggiore Blue on accents on the dashboard to complement the Windschill Grey interior, with hand-engraved door armrest tunnel caps featuring Campbell’s Bluebird motif and Abachi wood is bookmarked to convey the wake of a boat.
Rolls Royce has even fitted a ‘power reserve dial’ with a yellow and blue zone echoing Bluebird’s ‘in to the blue’ power dial at maximum revs, a bespoke clock with the Bluebird motif, a hand-embroidered panel in the glovebox showing Campbell’s records and a two-tone steering wheel with Maggiore Blue accents.
Just 35 of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Collection are being produced, and each will cost £435,000.
