Saab are axing over a third of their US dealerships as part of the plan to move Saab upmarket over the next six years.
The Koenigsegg deal to buy Saab is coming to its conclusion, and we’re starting to see some clear evidence of the direction the supercar maker intends taking Saab.
We reported recently on Koenigsegg’s plans to drive Saab upmarket, which is really the only way they are going to make the numbers add up. The plans are to increase the average price of a Saab by 50% over the next six years, and that’s going to mean a different demographic altogether. So it doesn’t come as a shock to learn that Saab are slashing their US dealerships by over a third, from 231 to 136.
We don’t have details on which dealerships are being axed yet, but it is almost certain that those dealerships will be the less profitable and those in poorer postcodes. Saab are looking at a demographic that would buy an Audi or a BMW or a Mercedes as their way forward and selling cheap cars in poor areas just won’t fulfil that ambition.
There have been no decisions yet on Saab dealerships in the UK and Europe, but it’s a safe bet that a similar culling will occur.
