Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying: Hamilton on POLE in Mercedes front row

Lewis Hamilton has taken his first pole since the opening race of as Mercedes lock out the front row in the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. It’s a Ferrari second row and Red Bull third.

Lewis Hamilton may be leading the 2018 Drivers table, but he’s not managed a pole position since the opening race of the 2018 F1 season. But that all changes as Hamilton takes pole at the Spanish Grand Prix, with team mate Bottas alongside, the Ferraris relegated to row two and the Red Bulls to row three. 

Hamilton managed to beat Bottas by just four hundredths of a second, but the Ferraris – so strong so far this year – couldn’t get close and Vettel will start in third with Raikkonen alongside in fourth, with the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo filling the third row.

Behind the top three teams it was the Haas of Magnussen in seventh place and, with a big sigh of relief in Woking, Alonso managed to put his McLaren in eighth (although Vandoorne only managed to qualify in 11th) with Sainz in the Renault and Grosjean in the Haas grabbing ninth and 10th.

But it was another woeful day for Williams, paying the price of a poor car and poor drivers in ‘Daddy bought me a driver spot’ Stroll, and Sirotkin, starting at the back of the grid.

History tells us Hamilton is likely to win from pole in Spain.
