Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak aims to be a record-breaking halo
Volkswagen are off to tackle the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in June in the I.D. R Pikes Peak, an electric halo car for the new I.D. range of electric cars.
Volkswagen’s latest pitch as it reinvents itself is this, the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak, a four-wheel drive electric car with the looks of a Le Mans racer heading for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb challenge in June.VW are using the I.D. R Pikes Peak as a halo for the new range of I.D. electric cars on the way, and aren’t just planning to tackle Pikes Peak, but tame it too with a new record for an electric car.
The computer generated image (above) of the I.D. R shows a very aerodynamic design with a big roof fin heading back from the glass canopy and looking like it acts as support for the small planet-sized wing at the back.
Despite the lofty ambitions for the I.D. R, VW are making no claims about what powers it or what performance it will have, but you can be pretty sure it will have an electric motor on each axle and enough battery power to go flat out – and quickly – to the top of Pike Peak’s 12.42 mile hill climb and its 156 twists and turns.
Dr. Frank Welsch, VW’s Board Member for Development, said:
We want to be at the forefront of electromobility with Volkswagen and the I.D. family.
Competing in the most famous hill climb in the world with the I.D. R Pikes Peak not only has symbolic meaning, but is also a valuable test for the general development of electric cars.
The 2018 Pikes Peak Hill Climb is on the 24th June, where we’ll find out if VW can take the EV record.
