The new Volvo V90 estate has been officially revealed in Sweden ahead of its public debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
The reveal of the new Volvo V90 hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Volvo, with the first official photos of the V90 arriving a week early. But Volvo has now done the official reveal in Sweden, so we get more photos of the new V90, the estate take on the new S90 and effectively the replacement for the V70 estate.
The V90 completes the trilogy of Volvo’s new ’90’ Series cars (for now, at least), and unsurprisingly much of what’s on offer comes from the S90 and XC90, which means very good looks, an exceptional interior and a feeling of ‘Class’ that eludes many premium makers.
The design of the V90 impresses, with a front end that is, to all intents and purposes, the S90, a rising shoulder line down the flanks and a back end that takes inspiration from the Concept estate, with a sloping back window, statement tail lights and a small spoiler. It’s an effective, appealing and cohesive look.
Inside, the V90 is much the same as the S90 – and inspired by the XC90 – with most functions delegated to the large central tablet screen, high quality leather and bleached wood and enough technology to keep anyone happy. Oh, and a plethora of safety systems too, as you’d expect from Volvo, including Volvo’s Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving, Large Animal Detection and run-off road mitigation.
Under the bonnet, it looks likely Volvo will focus on the D4 and D5 diesel Drive-E engines for the UK, with the D4 offering 187bhp and the D5 232bhp, with the D5 likely to get a 4WD option.
In terms of petrol engines, the V90 T8 Twin engine Hybrid with around 400bhp will be on offer for stunning BIK benefits, but beyond that we’re not sure Volvo will deliver the T5 or T6 petrol engined V90s in the UK.
But demand for petrol engines is growing, and you can get the T6 petrol on the XC90, so there’s a fair chance we’ll see the T6 in the UK, if not the T5.
The new Volvo V90 Estate debuts at the Geneva Motor Show before going on sale at Volvo’s UK dealers later in 2016.
