Mercedes McLaren SLR Stirling Moss

Back in December last year, Mercedes McLaren finally got round to revealing that the run-out model of the SLR would be the McLaren SLR Stirling Moss – dubbed SLR Speedster before it was announced. And what a swan-song. A car like no other (except perhaps the Veritas III) it looked just like a 1940s German Racer – which should have pleased Mercedes.

Featuring the same underpinnings as the McLaren SLR 722, it develops 650bhp and manages 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. Which should be enough to dislodge the toupee of those who can afford to buy it.

McLaren are only producing 75 SLR Stirling Moss, so perhaps it’s no real surprise that we’ve seen so little about the SLR since it launched. I suppose McLaren and Ron Dennis have got bigger fish to fry at the moment, with the huge plans they have for McLaren Automotive. First up will be the McLaren P11 – a Ferrari 458 Italia competitor – followed by the McLaren P8 and finally the replacement for the iconic McLaren F1.

But despite the lack of stuff floating about on the SLR Stirling Moss, we did manage to find a video of it on the track. Driven by French-born Canadian Bruno Spengler (who we’ll probably see in F1 before too long), it’s worth the watch.
