It looks like the decision to build a quattro platform for the Audi S1 will mean the 2012 VW Polo R will also be a quattro.
After the ‘Will they, Won’t they’ messing around in the run up to the Paris Motor Show with the Audi S1, we finally got the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI instead of the Audi S1. Why? Because Audi changed their minds at the last minute about launching a 2WD Audi ‘S’ in to the market.
But as we reported a couple of weeks ago, Audi are going to give us the Audi S1 Quattro, with a proper 4WD platform and the lump out of the Golf R, which will make the S1 a real little rocket. But it seems the change of heart on a quattro S1 will also mean good news for VW fans.
In order to make the quattro platform viable for the S1, it looks like the same platform is going to be used in the VW Polo R as well. Which will be a very enticing prospect as, in many ways, the new Polo is more appealing than its big brother.
What we don’t know is what’s going to power the VW Polo R Quattro. We think the quattro S1 will get the lump out of the Golf R, but the Polo can’t get that without trampling all over its big brother. So the most likely option is a 1.6 litre turbo with around 210-230bhp.
But great new for hot hatch fans.
