1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ fetches £1.96 million

November 4, 2012 By Cars UK

A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ sold for £1.96 million as the star of R.M. Auction’s 2012 London sale.

Despite Europe’s economy being in a huge hole, R.M Auction’s London sale of stunning cars (and bikes) was a resounding success, with sales totalling £14.26 million and 84 per cent of all lots off to new owners.

Star sale of the night in Battersea was a hugely desirable 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ by Carrozzeria Scaglietti which managed to reach £1.96 million (although a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Alloy Gullwing failed to sell at £2.4 million), but there were plenty of other lots reaching decent prices too.

We’ve already reported on Paul McCartney’s Aston Martin DB5 – which went for £307k – but other lots of note included a lovely 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Testa Fissa which fetched £784k (the second most expensive lot of the night), a  1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible which went for £633k and an original 1937 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet which made £616k.

Newer stuff was on offer too, with a 1988 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’ reaching £308k, a 2008 Bugatti Veyron going for a relatively low £580k (once VAT and premium added) and a 2008 Koenigsegg CCX which fetched just £246k (which is so low we’re digging for more information).

R.M. Auctions Max Girardo said:

Once again, our London sale has demonstrated that it successfully unites some the world’s finest cars with an audience of discriminating collectors from all corners of the world. Reflecting RM’s strong international client base, bidders at the sale hailed from 33 countries around the world, including as far away as Argentina, Hong Kong, India and Bahrain.

We enjoyed a fantastic night in central London with some incredible results. The sale certainly rounded out RM’s 2012 roster of European sales in the best possible fashion.

The mainstream car market may be in a perilous state at the moment in Europe, but the classic and investment market still seems strong, certainly going by R.M.’s results in Battersea.
