The 2013 Ford Fiesta with the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine is to launch in the U.S. in the New Year after a debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Ford is launching the 2013 Fiesta facelift – complete with its new Aston Martin grill – in the U.S. in the New Year, and out goes the naturally aspirated 1.6 litre petrol with is 120bhp and 112lb/ft of torque and in comes the new 3-cylinder 1.0 litre EcoBoost with a similar 123bhp but a more fulsome 148lb/ft of torque.
That will add up to a nippy Fiesta that can get to 62mph in 9.4 seconds with economy – at least official numbers – of around 70mpg and emissions of under 100g/km.
The Americans are only going to get the pokier 1.0 litre EcoBoost and not the 100PS version, but it remains to be seen what the US car buyer will think of an engine that most could fit in their lunch box. But Joe Bakaj, FordVP Powertrain Engineering, said:
Customers are going to be pleasantly surprised at what the smallest member of the EcoBoost engine family can do.
Most customers are not going to be thinking about the number of cylinders under the hood when they drive the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost Fiesta. They’ll notice an extremely smooth and quiet idle, terrific acceleration accompanied by a sporty sound at high revs, and – most importantly – outstanding fuel economy.
And he’s right – as long as Ford can convince buyers the 1.0 litre Fiesta is worth a look.
