The new Volkswagen Touareg has been revealed in China, showing a new Touareg that’s bigger, more upmarket and laden with new technology.
Volkswagen has been busy teasing the new Touareg to death, but it’s finally managed its drive from Europe to China and has been officially revealed this morning in VW’s biggest market. What sits under the new Touareg – the same platform as the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 – already makes it interesting, but what is perhaps most interesting is that it really looks to be going head-to-head with the Audi Q7.
Longer, wider and lower than the outgoing Touareg, the new Touareg looks more dynamic – in a rather ‘VW Conservative’ way – with nice design touches like the new IQ Light LED Matrix headlights blending in to the grille and the line running high down the flanks before lifting across the rear arches. It does look convincing.
But it’s the interior which pokes you in the eye and demands you look at what VW has done, with its seamlessly integrated twin screens for the digital instruments and infotainment (if you spend enough) delivering a 12″ instrument display blending in to the 15″ central infotainment. It’s impressive.
Other clever goodies (model dependant) include Active Roll Stabilisation to keep you upright, Night Vision so you can see even when you can’t, Roadwork Lane Assist, HUD and four-wheel steering.
Under the bonnet there’s a 362bhp plug-in hybrid option, although that seems to be only for China for now, and a pair of V6 diesels with either 228bhp or 282bhp. There’s also the promise of a 335bhp V6 petrol to come.
Expect the new VW Touareg to arrive in the UK in the summer, and although VW has given no indication of prices you can be pretty sure they won’t be less than the current model.
