Lewis Hamilton celebrates pole position at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton is in pole position for the first F1 Grand Prix of 2019 at Albert Park in Melbourne, with Bottas alongside for a Mercedes front row.
It may be a new Formula 1 Grand Prix season kicking off this weekend at Albert Park in Melbourne for the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, but it is, to a great degree, business as usual.Just as they have for so long, Mercedes has dominated the Grand Prix weekend at Albert Park, and Lewis Hamilton is on pole position for the race, with team mate Bottas alongside for a Mercedes front row.
It did look, for a short while in Q3, that Bottas might have bested Hamilton for pole, but the Brit came back with a lap just 0.112s faster to take pole.
Behind the Mercedes frot row it’s Sebastian vettel in the Ferrari starting in third – 0.704s behind – with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen alongside in fourth.
Vettel’s new team mate, Charles Leclerc, could only manage fifth, ahead of the Haas cars of Grosjean and Magnussen, and McLaren’s new driver – Brit Lando Norris – did a sterling job to grab eighth, with Kimi Raikkonen, now behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo (Sauber), in ninth and Perez in 10th for Racing Point (Force India).
Sadly, at the back of the grid sit the two Williams cars of Russell and Kubica (although Russell was much quicker) and the second McLaren of Carlos Sainz.
