Aston Martin DB11 Volante TEASE starts
The Aston Martin DB11 Volante – that’s the convertible version of the new DB11 – won’t arrive until Spring 2018, but the tease from AML has already started.
It’s only six months since the Aston Martin DB11 was revealed, and so far the DB11 hasn’t actually gone in to production, although assuming Andy Palmer stays awake that will start next month. But momentous though the arrival of a new DB from AML is – the first in almost 15 years – it is but the start of the renewal of Aston’s range of cars, with, in the DB mould, still the convertible DB11 and the Vanquish replacement to come.
It seems AML aren’t planning on delivering the Aston Martin DB11 Volante (that’s convertible in Aston-speak) until the spring of 2018, but despite that the tease has already started with two photos of a DB11 Volante Prototype (above and below) appearing today on Aston’s Facebook page – some eighteen months ahead of launch.
Clearly, AML has decided it wants to put spy photographers out of business by delivering their own ‘Spy’ shots of the DB11 Volante, but eighteen months ahead of the game does seem a bit much.
Still, it lets us see that what we’d expect from a convertible DB11 appears to be all present and correct, from the flowing lines and signature tail lights to the fabric folding roof, and although we don'[t get to see it we’re unassuming the nose is identical to the DB11 Coupe’s.
Under the skin will be the same 5.2 litre turbo V12 as the DB11 coupe, with 600bhp heading for the back wheels through an eight-speed auto, but we’d expect performance to be a bit blunted by the time the Volante’s had a couple of RSJs grafted in to keep the front in touch with the back.
In fact, the need to make sure the DB11 Volante is as appealing and stiff as the coupe could explain its long gestation and shakedown; the DB9 Volante, when it arrived, was actually woeful, with dodgy steering and more rock ‘n roll and twist from its body than Bill Haley and Chubby Checker could muster in their heyday.
Hopefully, in eighteen months time, the Aston Martin DB11 Volante will be perfect.
