The BMW 750d xDrive will be the first in BMW’s range to get a new 3.0 litre quad turbo diesel delivering 394bhp and 546lb/ft of torque.
Diesel engines with turbos have certainly changed driver’s perceptions of oil-burning cars with their ability to deliver decent economy and huge waves of torque (even if their NOx and particulate emissions are challenging). But turbos only work one they’ve got hold of enough exhaust gases to spool up, and the bigger the turbo the greater the lag before the car can deliver on its promise.
Car makers have taken to using a smaller turbo to get the power boost going before delivering the work over to a larger turbo, Audi has taken to bolting on an electric turbo which doesn’t rely on exhaust gases to achieve the same, and Volvo is using compressed air to quickly spool up the turbo in their new PowerPulse D5 engine.
But now BMW, who already have tri-turbo engines, has gone a step further by launching a quad turbo engine offering more power, more torque and improved economy and emissions.
The new 3.0 litre quad turbo diesel uses two low and two high pressure turbos to deliver 394bhp and 546lb/ft of torque (which has been limited so BMW don’t have to upgrade the eight-speed ZF automatic) and economy improvements of five per cent.
The first car to get the new engine will be the new BMW 750d xDrive – although it’s likely to roll out to the X5, X6, 6 Series and 5 Series too – where the new engine can despatch the 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds.
