The BMW M2 Competition officially arrives as a replacement for the current M2, complete with the M4’s engine and a price tag which jumps by around £3,000.
A week ago, BMW in Australia managed to reveal what we assumed was a Competition ‘Pack’ for the M2, but now BMW has caught up with the Aussie’s mistake it seems this isn’t a Competition ‘Pack’ for the M2, but a replacement.
The BMW M2 Competition is a reworking of the current M2, with a bit more hotness dialled in to the equation, in particular by borrowing the engine from the M4 to deliver a 404bhp and 406lb/ft punch – that’s up a chunk on the current M2 – and that’s enough to counteract its added 55kg and scoot to 62mph in 4.2 seconds.
We’re not entirely sure the extra power from the M4’s engine will make the M2 a better car, but BMW hasn’t just upped the power for the M2 Competition, they’ve done plenty of tweaking too.
Under the bonnet is a carbon fibre strut – just like the M4 – to keep the front end braced, oil movement when being a hooligan is controlled, there’s LDS coating on the bores, bigger brakes under new alloys, improve steering and retuned stability control.
Inside there’s M Sport seats with blue or orange accents, a red start-stop button (which obviously adds more power) and the same M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel you’ll see on the M4 Competition so you can quickly opt for your preferred settings.
The BMW M2 Competition goes on sale in the UK next month, with the manual version costing from £49,285 and the DCT from £51,930.
