Brazil Grand Prix 2014: Rosberg pips Hamilton to pole

The penultimate Grand Prix for 2014 in Brazil sees Nico Rosberg pip Lewis Hamilton to grab another Mercedes pole and another one-two start.

Qualifying last week and this in the world of F1 Grand Prix may have seemed a bit light on competing cars, but that really hasn’t detracted from the battles for position.

And the battle for pole at the Brazilian Grand Prix went down to the wire as Nico Rosberg put in a storming final qualifying lap to edge Lewis Hamilton in to second place for tomorrow’s race by just 0.033s. It also means Rosberg takes the new Pole Position Trophy for the most poles in 2014.

Hamilton appeared rather sanguine and not remotely rattled by Rosberg’s pole, but perhaps he believes that when it really matters – in the race – he’ll get the better of his German team mate? If he does, form would back him up.

Behind the Mercedes – and looking at one point as if they may beat or split them on the grid – it was Williams’ home boy Felipe Massa in third with Bottas in fourth in the second Williams.

In fifth spot is Jenson Button, again showing his young team mate how it should be done (and once more making McLaren’s apparent decision to dispense with his services in 2015 seem barking), alongside Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in sixth place.

Kevin Magnussen takes seventh for McLaren, Fernando Alonso eighth for Ferrari, Daniel Ricciardo ninth for Red Bull and Kimi Raikkonen rounds off the top ten.

In any other year, Hamilton could take the driver’s title tomorrow in Brazil, but thanks to the silly double points for Abu Dhabi that can’t happen. In fact, however the race tomorrow ends, it will all be down to the last race.

Which is no doubt what Bernie wanted.
