German media are reporting that Ford are planning to extend the Fiesta range with the arrival of a Fiesta RS in 2017 – the Fiesta’s 40th anniversary.
Update: To give this story some perspective from Ford’s point of view (and as we say in the article, Ford appears to have told its dealers there will be no Fiesta RS), Ford’s Director of Product Communications, Jay Ward, told us “…you shouldn’t believe what you read in the media!” after reading this story, a comment seconded by Tim Holmes, Head of PR at Ford of Britain.
Does that mean there will be no Fiesta RS? You judge.
The new Ford Focus RS looks set to be a triumph for Ford, with its 4WD powertrain, drift mode and 345bhp from its 2.3 litre EcoBoost engine. But it seems Ford are planning a baby brother for the Focus RS in the form of a new Ford Fiesta RS.
As far as we are aware, Ford has told its dealers there isn’t going to be a Fiesta RS, but Auto Bild are reporting Ford is planning to build a Fiesta RS after all, and launch it in 2017 as a celebration of the Fiesta’s 40th anniversary.
It’s said the Fiesta RS will almost certainly stick with front-wheel drive, but that it will get up to 250bhp from its 1.6 litre turbo, which should be enough to make it quite lively.
A Cars UK staffer has a new Fiesta ST with a chunk of mods from Demon Tweeks, and it’s surprisingly wieldy, despite putting around 250bhp through its front wheels.
Yes, there’s a degree of torque steer – and it could do with some harder pads – but it’s testament to the Fiesta’s cracking chassis that it copes very well with the extra power, manages to put it down and makes very impressive progress.
Beyond the extra power, the Fiesta ST is likely to get a relatively restrained cosmetic makeover – just like the Focus RS – with a more aggressive take on styling at the front and back, some new alloys and ‘RS’ badges.
